Best Wrinkle-Resistant Scrubs That Hold Up After Washing

Which scrubs come out of the dryer ready to wear, which brands actually claim wrinkle resistance, and what makes a scrub hold its shape after months of washing.

NurseComforts EditorsPublished 5 min read

Quick Answer

The best wrinkle-resistant scrub top we list is the Barco One Racer 5105: Barco states the fabric is wrinkle and soil resistant, and its 7 percent spandex is what helps a knit spring back into shape after a shift. For a woven, tailored look, Healing Hands states the Purple Label Jane resists wrinkles with wash-and-wear performance. Men get the closest match from the Adar Go-Basic set, which Adar describes as odor and wrinkle resistant. Whatever you buy, take scrubs out of the dryer promptly; that matters as much as the fabric.

Key takeaways

  • Polyester-rich blends resist creasing; cotton and rayon crease more. That is general fabric behaviour, not a brand claim.
  • Barco, Healing Hands, Adar and FIGS each state a wrinkle-resistance claim on their own product pages. Cherokee makes it for the Infinity jogger, not the top.
  • Holding shape after washing is mostly about spandex recovery, and heat is what wears spandex out. Barco and FIGS both specify a low tumble dry.
  • Cotton-rich poplin like the Dickies EDS Signature wrinkles, but it is the traditional workwear fabric for people who want something sturdy rather than slick.
  • No brand page here publishes a wash-count durability figure. Be wary of anyone who quotes one.

Barco One Racer 5105 Women's 4-Pocket Scrub Top

Owner rating4.6(4,704 reviews)
  • 50% polyester / 43% recycled polyester / 7% spandex, the highest spandex content among these tops
  • Four pockets without a cargo silhouette, so storage does not come with bulk
  • Perforated panels and side slits keep it breathable on a warm unit

Barco is the one maker here that states plainly on its own page that the fabric is wrinkle and soil resistant, and the 7 percent spandex is what pulls a knit back into shape after a shift of reaching and bending. Wash it cold and dry it low and it should keep doing that.

The best wrinkle-resistant scrub top we list is the Barco One Racer 5105 Women's 4-Pocket Scrub Top: Barco states the fabric is wrinkle and soil resistant, and its 7 percent spandex is what lets a knit spring back after a shift of reaching and bending. If you want a woven top that looks pressed, Healing Hands says the Healing Hands Purple Label Jane Women's Y-Neck Top resists wrinkles, and men get the closest match from the Adar Addition Go-Basic A9300 Men's Scrub Set. How we chose. Every wrinkle claim below is quoted from the brand's own product page, and we say where a brand makes none. Fabric explanations are general textile knowledge. We do not wash-test scrubs.

What actually makes a scrub resist wrinkles

Three things decide whether a scrub comes out of the dryer ready to wear.

  • Fiber. Polyester resists creasing and dries fast. Cotton and rayon absorb more water and hold creases. That is why the scrubs nurses describe as never needing an iron are polyester-heavy, and why a cotton-rich poplin needs to come out of the dryer warm.
  • Spandex, for shape. "Holds its shape" is a different property from "resists wrinkles." Spandex is the fiber that gives a scrub stretch and recovery, so knees and elbows do not bag by hour ten. It is also the fiber heat and chlorine bleach wear out first.
  • Finish and weave. Brands add finishes and choose knits or twills partly for how they shed creases. Those finishes are brand claims, and the wording is all we have to go on.

What "holds up after washing" really means

Durability in a scrub shows up as fading, pilling, thinning and lost stretch. None of the brand pages we read publishes a wash-count figure for any of these, so treat any number you see quoted with suspicion. What the pages do publish is care instructions, and those tell you a lot. Barco asks for a cold wash, non-chlorine bleach only if necessary, a low tumble dry and a low iron. FIGS asks for a cold, inside-out wash and a low tumble dry. Both are telling you the stretch fiber does not like heat.

That creates a real tension with infection-control advice to wash on the warmest setting the label allows. Our scrub washing guide works through it. The short answer is to buy the fabric that matches how you actually wash.

Our picks

1. Barco One Racer 5105 Women's 4-Pocket Scrub Top — the clearest wrinkle claim

Check price on Amazon →

On its own page, Barco describes the Racer as wrinkle and soil resistant, in a knit of 50 percent polyester, 43 percent recycled polyester and 7 percent spandex with 360 stretchfour-way stretchFabric that stretches and recovers along both the length and the width, usually via an elastane content of roughly 3-6 percent. Two-way stretch moves in one direction only. Four-way is the spec most associated with scrubs that squat and reach without binding, and with waistbands that recover rather than bag out.. That is the highest spandex share among our women's tops, which is what you want for holding shape. Four pockets, a quick-shed finish for hair and a 25.5 in center back round it out.

The cost is feel and care. It is a slick athletic fabric, and it wants a cold wash and a low dryer to stay that way.

2. Healing Hands Purple Label Jane Women's Y-Neck Top — the pressed look

Check price on Amazon →

Healing Hands says the Jane's twill "resists wrinkles and drapes beautifully all day," with true wash-and-wear performance, in 77 percent polyester, 20 percent rayon and 3 percent spandex. A woven twill with back darts gives the crispest silhouette here, which suits clinic work where looking put together matters. It is two-way stretch with two pockets, and Healing Hands recommends sizing up.

3. Adar Addition Go-Basic A9300 Men's Scrub Set — the men's pick

Check price on Amazon →

Adar describes the Go-Basic collection's 89 percent polyester, 11 percent spandex four-way-stretch weave as odor and wrinkle resistant. The set has eight pockets including a scissor pocket. The slim leg is less forgiving than a straight cut, and Adar's color names do not match mandated hospital shades.

4. Cherokee Infinity CK623A Women's V-Neck Scrub Top — the forum favourite, with a caveat

Check price on Amazon →

Cherokee Infinity is the line nurses name most often as never needing an iron. Be precise about the evidence, though. Cherokee's CK623A page lists a 95 percent polyester, 5 percent spandex stretch poplin with 360 stretch and a PROTX2 odor finish; the wrinkle-resistant description on that page belongs to the matching Infinity jogger, not this top. The fabric is polyester-heavy, so the forum reputation is plausible. It is just not a claim Cherokee makes for the top itself.

5. Dickies EDS Signature Women's V-Neck Scrub Top 86706 — sturdy, not crease-free

Check price on Amazon →

Dickies lists this top in a 55 percent cotton, 45 percent polyester brushed poplin, with no spandex and no wrinkle claim. It will crease if it sits in the dryer. We include it because cotton-rich poplin does not depend on a stretch fiber for its shape, so it is the traditional choice if you would rather a scrub feel sturdy than slick. It is also the cheapest top here.

Habits that matter as much as fabric

  • Take scrubs out the moment the dryer stops. Shake, then hang or roll. Folding warm scrubs sets creases.
  • Dry low. It is what Barco and FIGS specify, and it protects spandex.
  • Skip chlorine bleach on stretch scrubs. Barco says non-chlorine only.
  • Rescue a wrinkled set with a short warm tumble and a damp cloth rather than an iron.
  • Retire a set when the knees bag or the fabric thins, whatever the brand. Our fit guide shows what a scrub that still fits looks like.

Common questions

What scrubs do not wrinkle?
No scrub is wrinkle-proof, but polyester-rich performance blends come closest. Barco states the Barco One Racer is wrinkle and soil resistant, Healing Hands says the Purple Label Jane resists wrinkles, and Adar describes the Go-Basic set as wrinkle resistant. Cotton-rich poplins crease more.
Which scrubs hold up best after repeated washing?
No brand publishes a reliable wash-count figure, so judge by fabric and care. Polyester-spandex blends keep their color and shape when washed cold and dried low; cotton-polyester poplin tolerates rougher handling but wrinkles and can fade. Follow the care label either way.
Why do my scrubs lose their shape?
Usually the spandex has worn out. Spandex gives a scrub its stretch and recovery, and high dryer heat and chlorine bleach degrade it over time. That is why Barco and FIGS both specify a low tumble dry, and Barco says to use non-chlorine bleach if needed.
How do I keep scrubs from wrinkling?
Take them out of the dryer as soon as it stops, shake them out and hang or roll them. Do not leave them in a pile. A short warm tumble with a damp cloth relaxes creases if they sat too long.
Are cotton scrubs better for washing?
Cotton-rich poplin is the traditional uniform fabric and does not rely on spandex for its shape, so it is less sensitive to heat. The tradeoff is wrinkles and less stretch. Check our scrub washing guide before you choose a hot cycle.
Do wrinkle-resistant scrubs need ironing?
Usually not, if you dry them low and remove them promptly. Barco's care label even says iron low if needed, which tells you the fabric is not built for high heat.
