Quick Answer
Start with the Brooks Ghost 18: Brooks makes it in narrow, medium, wide and extra-wide for both women (2A to 2E) and men (B to 4E), and it is the least expensive of the cushioned trainers we list. The New Balance 1080v15 comes in the same four-width spread with more cushioning, and the HOKA Bondi 9 in regular, wide and extra-wide. If your unit requires a slip-resistant outsole, the Skechers Arch Fit 2.0 SR and the Dansko XP 2.0 both come in a women's wide.

- Nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 midsole, now with an Ortholite X-60 sockliner for step-in comfort

For nurses with wide feet, the Brooks Ghost 18 is the safest first order: Brooks makes it in four widths for both women (narrow 2A to extra-wide 2E) and men (narrow B to extra-wide 4E), at the lowest price of the cushioned trainers we list. Choose the New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v15 if you want more cushioning across the same four widths, and the work-rated or clog options below if your unit requires a slip-resistant outsoleslip-resistant outsoleAn outsole compound and tread pattern intended to keep traction on wet or contaminated floors. Testing is not uniform: some brands cite an ASTM or SATRA coefficient-of-friction result, most simply print the phrase on the box. Where a manufacturer names the standard we say so; where it only claims 'slip-resistant' with no standard behind it, that is all the claim is worth..
Width is the most under-diagnosed problem in nursing shoes. Feet swell over a twelve-hour shift12-hour shiftThe three-shifts-per-week pattern common in hospital nursing, and the interval most of our footwear, sock and hydration scoring is framed around. It matters for gear because foot swelling, foam compression and insulation hold time all behave differently over twelve hours than over eight., and a shoe that is merely snug at 7 a.m. pinches by mid-afternoon. A lot of what gets blamed on thin cushioning is really a width problem. Sizing up in length is not the fix, because it moves the arch supportarch supportThe height and firmness of the contoured section under the medial arch of a footbed or insole. 'Support' is not one thing: insoles are sold in low, neutral and high arch profiles, and a high-arch insole under a low-arch foot is the most common cause of the 'these hurt' review. Arch height is a fit question, not a quality ranking. and the flex point to the wrong place. The fix is ordering the right width, which means knowing which models are actually made in one.
Every width on this page comes from the maker's own product page or our catalog record. Availability changes by colour, so treat the table as where to look, and confirm the exact width in the size selector before you check out.
Our top picks
1. Brooks Ghost 18 — four widths in both cuts
Check price on Amazon →Brooks publishes a plain width chart: women's narrow 2A, medium B, wide D and extra-wide 2E; men's narrow B, medium D, wide 2E and extra-wide 4E. Brooks' own pages offer the Ghost 18 in all four, women's US 5 to 13 and men's US 7 to 15. Brooks also explains what changes between them: narrow, medium and wide share the same footbed and differ in how much upper surrounds your foot, while extra-wide adds a wider footbed too. If a wide still pinches across the ball of your foot, extra-wide is a different shoe rather than just a looser one.
The ride is balanced rather than plush, Brooks states a 10 mm drop, and the mesh upper is road-running material with no slip rating. Around $135.
2. New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v15 — the plusher four-width option
Check price on Amazon →New Balance lists the 1080v15 in narrow (2A), standard (B), wide (D) and extra-wide (2E) for women, US 5 to 13, and narrow (B), standard (D), wide (2E) and extra-wide (4E) for men, US 7 to 16. It is New Balance's plushest daily trainer, with Infinion foam, a molded mesh upper that gives as feet swell, and a stated 6 mm drop. Our catalog notes that wide fits are not offered on every colourway. Around $170.
3. HOKA Bondi 9 — regular, wide and extra-wide
Check price on Amazon →HOKA lists the Bondi 9 in regular, wide and extra-wide for women (US 4 to 12) and men (US 7 to 16). HOKA does not give letter equivalents on the product page, so do not try to match its wide to another brand's letters. It is the deepest cushioning we list and the road build, not the slip-resistant Bondi SR. The HOKA Clifton 11 comes in the same three widths if you want a lighter shoe. Around $175.
If you want max cushioning in a wide for less, the outgoing Brooks Ghost Max 3 offers regular, wide and extra-wide on its women's listing and men's D, 2E and 4E per Brooks, at around $100 while stock lasts. Brooks has replaced it with the Ghost Max 4, so expect gaps in the size run, and like the Bondi it is a road build with a mesh upper.
4. Skechers Work Arch Fit 2.0 SR Rosraine — wide and slip-resistant
Check price on Amazon →If your unit requires a slip-resistant outsole, the choice narrows quickly, and width narrows it further. Skechers sells this women's work shoe in medium and wide, US 5 to 11, with a leather upper, a removable Arch Fit insole and an outsole Skechers states is slip-resistant. It packs out sooner than the trainers above. Around $100. Men get a separate style, the Skechers Men's Work Arch Fit 2.0 SR, which Skechers also makes in medium and wide, US 7 to 14.
5. Dansko XP 2.0 Clog — the wide clog
Check price on Amazon →Dansko offers the women's XP 2.0 in Black Waterproof Pull Up in regular and wide, and the size listing we link is a wide. Dansko designs the toe boxtoe boxThe front section of a shoe surrounding the toes. Width and height here drive most comfort complaints on shift footwear, because feet swell over a twelve-hour shift and a toe box that fits at 7 a.m. can be tight by 5 p.m. Some brands publish width designations (D, 2E, 4E); many publish nothing. to be roomy and the heel to move freely, so a correctly fitted Dansko feels looser than a sneaker, and sizing runs in whole European sizes. The men's XP 2.0 style we checked comes in regular only. Around $165.
Two more clogs are worth knowing about. Sanita lists its women's Professional Cabrio in narrow, medium and wide, EU 35 to 43, but the men's in medium only. Clove sells a separate wide version of its women's Classic on its own site; the listing we link for the Clove does not state a width.
How to buy the right width
Use letters within a brand, not across brands. Width letters are not standardised between makers, and HOKA does not use them at all on its product pages.
A women's wide is a men's standard. On Brooks' chart, a women's wide is a D and so is a men's medium. That is why many nurses with wide feet try men's shoes. Brooks converts length by 1.5 sizes, so a women's 10 wide is a men's 8.5 wide. Our men's nursing shoes guide lists men's size runs.
Expect fewer colours. Brooks says specialty widths are mostly made in its best-selling neutral colours. Choose the width first and the colour second.
Measure late in the day. Swelling is the whole point, so measure at the end of a shift, and get measured at a running store at least once.
Allow for the insert. A thick orthotic takes up volume. If you wear one, a wide may be right even if a medium fits barefoot.
Three fit checks before you wear them on shift
Wear new shoes around the house first, on a hard floor, at the end of a day.
The insole test. Take the insole out and stand on it. If the sides of your foot spill over its edges, the shoe is too narrow however the upper feels, because the upper will stretch and your foot will still overhang the platform.
The pinch test. Lace normally, then press across the widest part of the upper. You should be able to pinch a little material over the ball of your foot. Tight across the ball with room at the toes means you need width, not length.
The heel test. Walk briskly. Your heel should not slide up and down in a sneaker. If moving to a wide has opened up heel slip, try the same width in a model with a more structured heel, or lace through the top eyelets to lock it.
Wide or extra-wide?
If you already wear wide and it pinches by mid-shift, extra-wide is the next step, and on Brooks' description it is a different shoe: a wider footbed under the foot, not just more upper around it. That matters if your foot is wide at the sole, which a roomier upper cannot fix. If your foot is high in volume rather than broad, with a tall instep that presses against the laces, a wide upper may be enough.
When a wide or extra-wide still hurts at one point only, usually over a bunion or the little toe, the shoe is no longer the whole answer. A podiatrist can tell you whether a different last, a stretch over that point or a custom insert is the better fix.
If you also have heel pain, our plantar fasciitis guide covers drop and orthotic fit, and the best shoes for nurses hub covers slip ratings and wipeable uppers.
Cheaper alternative
Brooks Ghost 18 ($133.99) is our #1 pick here. If that is more than you want to spend, this is a cheaper option in the same category — our researched verdict on it is below.
Skechers Work Arch Fit 2.0 SR Rosraine
This is the honest budget answer in the category: a slip-resistant work outsole as Skechers states it, plus the Arch Fit footbed, at roughly half what the premium picks cost. The listing also states electrical hazard protection and a breathable leather upper, so it is the only shoe here that is both wipeable and described by its maker as slip-resistant at this price. The tradeoff is cushioning depth: the Arch Fit stack is thinner than a HOKA or New Balance trainer and compresses sooner, so budget on replacing it more often than you would a premium shoe.
Worth the upgrade
Brooks Ghost 18 ($133.99) is our #1 pick here. If your budget stretches further, this is a pricier option in the same category — our researched verdict on it is below.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v15
This resolved to the 1080 v15, the current generation, which replaces Fresh Foam X with New Balance's new Infinion cushioning and a molded mesh upper. It earns a premium slot because the 1080 line is New Balance's plushest daily trainer and the family has historically been catalogued in more widths than almost anything else, which matters if your feet swell across a twelve. The tradeoff is that this is a road-running build with no slip-resistance rating and a mesh upper, and width availability varies by colorway, so confirm the exact width on the listing before you order.
