Read the guide →Sneakers that hold up to twelve hours on hospital tile — cushioning that lasts past hour eight, outsoles that grip a wet floor, and uppers you can actually wipe down.
The HOKA Bondi 9 is the pick for most floor nurses: the deepest cushion stack in the lineup, around $160. The tradeoff is that it is a road shoe - an engineered mesh upper with no slip-resistance certification. Want a work build whose maker states a slip-resistant outsole instead? The Skechers Arch Fit 2.0 SR is the honest budget answer at about $100.

The reasoning behind each rank — the numbers live in the table above.

#1 · HOKA Bondi 9
The Bondi is HOKA's maximum-cushion road shoe, and this is the standard Bondi 9 build: engineered mesh upper, textile lining, and the thickest foam stack HOKA puts under a daily trainer. It earns the top cushioning slot here because nothing else in this category puts that much material between your heel and hospital tile, and HOKA lists it at 9.3 oz in the women's build. The honest tradeoff is that this is not the Bondi SR work version: the mesh upper soaks rather than wipes, and the road outsole carries no slip-resistance certification, so check your unit's footwear policy before you commit.
✓ Maximum-cushion HOKA platform, the deepest foam stack among the shoes here
✗ Not a slip-resistant certified work shoe: this is the road build, not the Bondi SR
Road build, not the Bondi SR: HOKA states no slip-resistance rating, and the engineered-mesh upper cannot be wiped down. Check your unit's footwear policy first.

#2 · Brooks Ghost 17
The Ghost is the neutral daily trainer nurses keep re-buying, and version 17 adds 1mm of DNA LOFT v3 in the heel and 3mm in the forefoot over the Ghost 16. It earns its rank on ride quality rather than protection: flex grooves in the midsole make it move, so it suits units where you cover ground instead of standing in one room. Brooks also lists it as carrying the APMA Seal of Acceptance and PDAC A5500 diabetic certification, which is more third-party paperwork than most shoes here have.
✓ Nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 cushioning, with more foam in heel and forefoot than the Ghost 16
✗ Mesh road-running upper cannot be wiped clean and absorbs spills
Road build: Brooks states no slip-resistance rating, and the air-mesh upper cannot be wiped down. Check your unit's footwear policy first.

#3 · HOKA Clifton 11
This resolved to the Clifton 11, the current generation, and it is the answer for anyone who liked HOKA cushioning but found the Bondi clunky: HOKA lists the women's Clifton 11 at 8.34 oz with an 8mm drop, roughly an ounce lighter than the Bondi 9. The Smooth MetaRocker and rearfoot-focused Active Foot Frame do the roll-through work without the tall, tippy feeling of a max-stack shoe. The tradeoff is the same as the other running shoes here: engineered mesh upper, road outsole, no slip-resistance rating and nothing to wipe clean.
✓ HOKA lists the women's Clifton 11 at 8.34 oz, notably lighter than the Bondi
✗ Engineered mesh upper is not fluid-resistant and cannot be wiped clean
Road build: HOKA states no slip-resistance rating, and the engineered-mesh upper cannot be wiped down. Check your unit's footwear policy first.

#4 · New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v15
This resolved to the 1080 v15, the current generation, which replaces Fresh Foam X with New Balance's new Infinion cushioning and a molded mesh upper. It earns a premium slot because the 1080 line is New Balance's plushest daily trainer and the family has historically been catalogued in more widths than almost anything else, which matters if your feet swell across a twelve. The tradeoff is that this is a road-running build with no slip-resistance rating and a mesh upper, and width availability varies by colorway, so confirm the exact width on the listing before you order.
✓ Infinion cushioning is New Balance's newest premium underfoot foam, tuned for energy return
✗ Not slip-resistance rated and not wipeable, so it fails a strict unit policy
Road build: New Balance states no slip-resistance rating, and the molded-mesh upper cannot be wiped down. Check your unit's footwear policy first.

#5 · Skechers Work Arch Fit 2.0 SR Rosraine
This is the honest budget answer in the category: a slip-resistant work outsole as Skechers states it, plus the Arch Fit footbed, at roughly half what the premium picks cost. The listing also states electrical hazard protection and a breathable leather upper, so it is the only shoe here that is both wipeable and described by its maker as slip-resistant at this price. The tradeoff is cushioning depth: the Arch Fit stack is thinner than a HOKA or New Balance trainer and compresses sooner, so budget on replacing it more often than you would a premium shoe.
✓ Slip-resistant outsole as Skechers states it, which most shoes at this price do not claim at all
✗ Thinner cushioning stack that packs out sooner than the premium trainers here

#6 · Clove Classic Healthcare Sneaker
Clove built this shoe for one job, and it shows: a fluid-resistant Clarino vegan leather upper, hydrophobic stitching, fluid-repellent elastic no-tie laces, and a neoprene ankle collar that takes the same wipes you use on equipment. It earns its place because it is the only pick here where cleanability is the design premise rather than a side effect. The tradeoff is the footbed, which is modest by design so it can be swapped, and the price sits at premium-running-shoe money without a running shoe's foam stack.
✓ Fluid-resistant Clarino upper plus hydrophobic stitching, built to wipe down between shifts
✗ Stock footbed is modest; many wearers add an aftermarket insole, which is an extra cost
What nurses say to each other
HOKA, mainly the Bondi and Clifton, is the most-named shoe across r/nursing, r/Nurses and r/NursingStudent, but the threads are not a consensus so much as a long argument: plenty of nurses report shin splints, a too-bouncy unstable feel or a plantar fasciitis flare from the same models, and Brooks, New Balance, ASICS, Altra and traditional clogs all have committed holdouts. Clove is the clearest split in the community, praised for wiping clean and surviving spills and disliked by others who got blisters or numb toes in a single shift. The advice that recurs regardless of brand is to get fitted at a running store with a gait assessment and a generous return window, because foot shape decides this and someone else's favourite shoe transfers badly, and to treat insoles and compression socks as part of the setup rather than an afterthought. Fluid resistance is a bigger theme than shopping guides suggest, since mesh runners soak through when a patient spills or leaks on you, which is what pushes people toward wipeable leather, clogs or work-specific models.

The surprising truth
The APMA Seal of Acceptance that appears on nursing-shoe marketing is explicitly not an endorsement. APMA's own FAQ says so in those words, and the review panel that grants it is confidential. It means a company submitted samples and documentation and a panel of member physicians agreed the product promotes quality foot health — useful, but a lower bar than the badge implies.
What we didn’t pick
Popular options we evaluated and passed on, with the specific reason each one fell short of our picks.
Huge search volume in nursing shoe lists, but the outsoles carry no slip-resistance rating and the uppers are unwipeable mesh — wrong tool for a floor with fluids on it.
Real slip-resistant credentials, but the rocker sole belongs in our clogs category, and their cushioning stack is well below the max-cushion picks here.
Excellent after a shift, but the soft closed-cell foam offers little lateral stability for twelve hours of moving, and they are not slip-resistance rated.
What to look for
Across the six shoes we shortlisted, only two carry a work-rated slip-resistant outsole and only two have a wipe-clean, fluid-resistant upper — the other four are road-running shoes that nurses adopted.
Three things decide whether a shoe survives your shift, and only one of them is comfort in the store.
Cushioning that lasts, not cushioning that feels good on day one. Hospital floors are concrete under vinyl — there is no give at all, so every bit of shock absorption has to come from the shoe. Max-cushion midsoles (the HOKA Bondi platform, New Balance's Fresh Foam X) carry more foam precisely so they still have some left by hour ten. The flip side: foam is a consumable. Most people running full-time shifts get two to three seasons of real support out of a pair, and the shoe usually looks fine long after it has stopped working. If your feet started hurting again and you can't say why, check the age of the shoe first.
Slip resistance is a rated feature, not a vibe. A running shoe outsole is tuned for dry asphalt. A work-rated outsole — the Bondi SR, Skechers' SR line, Crocs' work range — is tested against wet and greasy floors. If your unit has a policy, it almost certainly means the rated kind. If it doesn't, you still work somewhere people spill things.
Fluid resistance and cleanability. This is where healthcare-specific brands earn their place. Clove builds the whole shoe around it: a fluid-resistant Clarino upper, hydrophobic stitching, a wipeable neoprene collar, and elastic laces so you never handle a lace that has been on a hospital floor. A mesh running shoe absorbs whatever lands on it, permanently.
Then fit, and be honest about it. Feet swell across a shift — most people are a half size larger at hour ten than at hour one. Size for the end of the shift, not the start. If you have never been fitted for width, do that before you spend another dollar on cushioning; a lot of "this shoe hurts" is a width problem wearing a cushioning costume.
Two pairs beat one expensive pair. Alternating days lets foam decompress and lets a wet shoe dry. It is the cheapest upgrade on this page.

The HOKA Bondi 9 is the pick for most people on hard floors, but your workplace's slip-resistance rule and how often the shoe gets wiped decide more of this tha
